Soil and Spice, founded by Kelly Troutman and her mother-in-law, Connie Troutman, is a skincare company that specializes in high-quality tallow products. The tallow used in their creams, soaps, and lip balms comes from cattle raised on the Troutman family’s farm, Reu-Hel Farm, which has been in operation since 1945. Connie, along with her husband Scott and their three grown sons, continues to run Reu-Hel, which boasts a herd of 100 Registered Holsteins, 100 Registered Jerseys and a small angus Hereford beef cow/ calf operation on a 500 acre farm.
The journey into skincare began for Kelly with a personal struggle. After the birth of her son, she faced persistent skin issues that conventional products couldn’t solve. When Connie suggested using tallow—already available through their family’s dairy and beef operation—it marked the beginning of a life-changing discovery. What started as a personal project for Kelly and her family soon blossomed into Soil and Spice. They began experimenting with tallow, learning how to properly render it and infuse it with skin-beneficial plants, eventually creating skincare products that transformed Kelly’s skin and delighted friends and family.
As the business grew, Kelly and Connie decided to share their products more widely. Today, Soil and Spice offers a variety of tallow-based skincare, with a focus on creams, soaps, and lip balms, all hand- crafted using the finest natural ingredients. The company operates both online and through vendor shows, as well as in select stores, allowing them to connect directly with customers. Soil and Spice is committed to quality, sustainability, and honoring the traditions of their farming heritage.
In addition to skincare, Reu-Hel Farm continues its proud legacy in dairy farming and agricultural innovation. The family also raises ducks for Jurgielewicz Tasty Ducks and operates Troutman Custom Work. Kelly and Connie’s passion for skincare and their dedication to creating nourishing products has made Soil and Spice a growing success, with each customer’s feedback fueling the next step in their journey.
